That Chip on Your Bonnet Is Trying to Tell You Something
You notice it on a Sunday afternoon. You’re walking past the car, coffee in hand, and something catches your eye. A stone chip — or maybe a cluster of them — right there on the bonnet. Then you look a bit closer and there’s a scratch near the door handle you hadn’t noticed before. And another one on the front bumper.
You stand there for a moment wondering: how long have those been there? And more to the point — what are you supposed to do about them?
If that sounds familiar, then you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get asked and the good news is: the answer is simpler — and more affordable — than most people expect.
Why small chips are a bigger deal than they look
A stone chip might seem like a purely cosmetic issue. A little blemish, easy to ignore; but here’s what’s actually happening when a stone whacks your paint at motorway speed.
The impact breaks through the paint surface and often right down to bare metal underneath. Once that seal is broken, moisture gets in and moisture on bare metal does one thing: it rusts. Rust doesn’t always stay in one place… It can spread laterally under the surrounding paint turning something quite minor into a bubbling, flaking patch of corrosion. What was a modest repair becomes a costly one. At a minimum it can form small ugly rust spots that eventually stain the surrounding paintwork and create deeper corrosion.
The chip itself isn’t the problem but the rust that follows it is. And rust is always easier — and cheaper — to prevent than to fix.
New Zealand conditions make this worse than many people realise. Our coastal air carries salt, our summer UV is harsh and our roads chip paint relentlessly. A car that looks fine at the beginning of winter can look quite different by the following summer if chips are left unattended.
What about just leaving it for the panel beater?
This is where a lot of vehicle owners end up — eventually; bbut a traditional panel repair is often the wrong tool for this job.
A full panel respray means removing the panel, stripping it back, priming, painting, and clear-coating. It takes days and costs hundreds of dollars and it introduces its own complications: the best paint your car will ever have is the paint it left the factory with. No respray, however well done, fully replicates an OEM factory finish.
For stone chips and minor scratches, there’s a better approach — one that addresses the damage without disturbing the surrounding factory paint at all.

Our technicians use highly concentrated paint tinters to mix a colour that gets as close as possible to your vehicle’s existing finish.
That carefully matched colour is then applied using an airbrush directly into the chip, filling and treating the damaged area. We then use Formula 184 — our own finishing formulation — to smooth the surface and restore the appearance of the surrounding paint.
The goal of the SmartChip® system isn’t to repaint your car — it’s to treat the damage while leaving the surrounding factory paint untouched. The best paint your vehicle will ever have is the finish it came with.
The result is a discrete repair that minimizes the appearance of the damage and, most importantly, reseals the exposed area against moisture and rust. What you’re left with is a surface that looks considerably better than it did — and is now protected.
